The Senior Director for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery will lead and provide strategic direction for enterprise business continuity and disaster recovery across the Health System. This role is responsible for communicating, developing, implementing, maintaining, and managing both the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery programs. The objectives of these programs are to support timely operations and IT recovery following the occurrence of an outage or major disaster that may result in a partial or complete disruption of business and IT operations. This candidate will need to ensure that critical services and capabilities remain operational, appropriate communications to stakeholders are conducted, and financial and reputation loss is minimized. The Senior Director will plan and coordinate business continuity and disaster recovery strategies that comply with applicable regulations and are directly aligned to our organizational and IT objectives.

The Senior Director will lead and build a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery team and partner closely with stakeholders across the organization to ensure practices, policies and plans are free from bias and discrimination in all its forms. The role will align operations and IT to prevent, plan, and support these programs by utilizing an inclusive, cooperative, and consensus-building process. The Senior Director will report to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).


Provide leadership and strategy for Business Continuity (BC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) program

  • Plan, build, run and manage enterprise-wide BC and DR including strategies, plan development, plan exercising, and manage related IT budgets (capital and operational), annual program agendas, and recovery improvement metrics.
  • Participate in assessments of the impact of potential disruptions in IT services (on premise and hosted), including declaring a disaster and activating the IT DR plan.
  • Manage the execution and completion of all BC and DR test activities and identify recommendations to improve process, plans, and procedures.
  • Maintain close partnership with business unit management, external business partners, and key IT staff for all BC and DR planning, testing, and execution
  • Manage and enforce contracts, along with associated service-level agreements (SLAs), for external IT BC and DR service providers, as required.
  • Assume management responsibility for BC and DR (including data-center-specific and non-data-center-specific IT infrastructure), with a major focus on achieving all financial estimates, ensuring adequacy of end-state production recovery environments, meeting all strategic planning deliverables, and coordinating activities of technology resources with key business units and development groups, as required.
  • Initiate and manage data center recovery capacity planning coordination with key IT technology groups in support of specific business unit initiatives (current, planned and new), focusing on proactively ensuring an adequate recovery network and processing environment, as well as accurate and predictive budgeting.
  • Conduct contingency planning including identifying potential business interruptions, developing safeguards against disruptions, and implementing recovery procedures that includes consideration for cloud delivered applications and services.
  • Develop business recovery plans and procedures.
  • Manage risk through identifying and categorizing outage exposures that could cause a business disruption and understand insurance and vendor agreements to safeguard against a disaster event.
  • Oversee the execution of BC and DR plans when IT and/or major business operations disruptions occur.
  • Oversee the design, execution and continuous improvement of BC and DR plans through rigorous exercising.
  • Interface with the IT PMO to ensure that new and ongoing projects sustain the level of recoverability consistent with business objectives.
  • Manage the creation of program status communications to internal management (e.g., board of directors, the audit committee, and other leadership committees) and external stakeholders (including regulators, auditors and customers) regarding the status of the BC and DR program, including annual reporting, audit report responses and customer requests.
  • Perform all departmental administrative activities, including staff meeting attendance, monthly status reporting, budgeting, strategic planning, staff performance management, expense processing, documentation and other activities, as assigned, in a timely fashion.
  • Develop and manage key performance indicators related to BC and DR to ensure objectives are met.
  • Strive to reduce costs and improve services through new technologies, automation, creative sourcing, and other innovative methods.
  • Ensure that all practices and policies related to BC and DR are free from bias and discrimination.
  • Keep abreast of latest BC and DR trends, best practices, and technologies. Develop and manage a world-class team
    • Be a leader with a passion for BC and DR who can build credibility for the team within the organization.
    • Champion and advocate for the value of diversity, equity and inclusion taking action to increase workplace diversity by promoting and developing staff from under-represented minority groups.
    • Develop a diverse team ensuring high levels of employee engagement, operations performance excellence, and appropriate succession planning.

    • Assist direct reports with ongoing prioritization and resource allocation to ensure that the crucial business initiatives are delivered.
    • Provide guidance on recruitment and career pathing for data and analytics resources.
    • Balance team resourcing and talent management.
    • Utilize leadership skills, problem solving and decision-making skills to facilitate and encourage participation of team members to meet objectives in congruence with approved standards and guidelines. Participate actively as a leader within the Mount Sinai Health System
      • Serve as the BC and DR Representative in Mount Sinai leadership teams, committees, etc.
      • Create awareness, knowledge and conviction around the importance of BC and DR.
      • Use a lens of equity in establishing and promoting policies and procedures.
      • Confront racist, sexist or other inappropriate behavior and challenge exclusionary organizational practices and serving as a role model to promote anti-racist behaviors.
      • Execute select strategic innovation initiatives as directed by the CIO and other leadership.
      • Ensure that all regulatory and auditing guidelines are followed, and solid business practices are implemented. EXPERIENCE:
        • Leader with over 10+ years of experience in both business continuity and disaster recovery
        • BS or MS in Computer Science or related major
        • Experience with hospital or healthcare provider preferred
        • Solid background in IT environment, operations, and technology
        • BCM certifications preferred QUALIFICATIONS
          • "Executive presence" and the ability to immediately establish credibility within the organization and with customers and partners. Must have the managerial skills to work effectively across all functions and levels of the organization.
          • Proven skills in leadership of a significant IT organization, with a proven track record in delivering committed results in a complex and diverse academic medical environment
          • Skilled in navigating complex organizational relationships, with a strong track record of driving organizational cultural change. Politically astute; understands dynamics of relationships and will remain balanced and objective.
          • Effective and highly credible working relations with individuals at all levels of the organization, from entry-level to the medical staff and board members.
          • A tenacious drive for results, utilizing sound project management, organizational, information systems and problem solving skills. Must be able to hold the organization and individuals, including self, accountable.
          • A natural ability to effectively work with others in ways that fosters personal and professional ownership. Open, fair, and willing to engage others in issues that may potentially be controversial or unpopular.
          • Ability to take appropriate, calculated risks and can approach issues in an open-minded, innovative, and creative manner.
