Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Sanctuary for Families seeks a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer (DEI) to develop and lead an organization-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy. The DEI Officer will be responsible for advancing an overarching vision of DEI for the organization that promotes anti-racist practices and deconstruction of systemic practices relating to gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, ageism, language and socio-economic practices across Sanctuary's program and operational department areas, internal practices, and organizational culture. The DEI Officer will collaborate with the Senior HR Leadership and work closely with staff across all of Sanctuary's programs and operational departments, senior leadership and the Board to address and advance the organization's DEI goals. This position requires an inspiring and collaborative professional with outstanding people and management skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Advance the DEI priorities outlined in the organization's multi-year strategic plan, including but not limited to:
  - Confirming a shared vision and goals around DEI building off existing goals
  - Creating and putting into practice a dynamic DEI curriculum to guide staff, leadership, and Board training and learning - Increasing opportunities for transparent and open discussion related to DEI
  • Provide strategic leadership in the development of culturally-specific and responsive programming across the organization
  • Examine internal policies procedures, and practices to identify opportunities for the organization to modify or align practices and policy positions with the organization's DEI goals
  • Serve as the liaison to the DEI Committee of the Board of Directors, provide expert advice, and serve as a thought partner; provide Board updates on Sanctuary's DEI goals and progress
  • Help advance their work around and align priorities with the Board DEI Committee and staff committees like DEI Committee and LGBTQ+ working group
  • Provide Executive Director and Board updates on Sanctuary's DEI goals and progress
  • Support the work of the staff affinity groups
  • Collaborate with the Senior HR Leadership to design and implement strategies for recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce and providing training and professional development opportunities
  • Provide recommendations to the Senior HR Leadership regarding current promotion and career advancement practices through a DEI lens
  • Organize and facilitate internal discussions around emerging issues relevant to our work
  • Partner with the HR team and the Program Data, Evaluation, and Impact unit to develop accountability metrics and prepare reports on relevant progress of the organization's DEI efforts from both a client and staff perspective
  • Monitor practices and impact against Sanctuary's DEI goals and develop concrete recommendations for adjusting policy and practice to align with these goals, as needed.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships in the DEI community with learning institutions and external organizations that focus on promoting and enhancing DEI
    - Collaborate with the of the Development and Communications department to communicate DEI as an organizational priority to internal and external stakeholders and on social media platforms

    Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
    
    • Ability to engage with staff, leadership, and the Board of Directors to promote trust, collaboration, and partnership
    • Demonstrated track record of advancing organizational change and operationalizing a DEI strategy
    • Strong knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness research and best practices
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish credibility with staff and leadership
    • Strong management capabilities and ability to oversee multiple projects at the same time
    • Demonstrated experience with leveraging data to advance equitable practices at an organization
      Experience and qualifications
      
      • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Multicultural and Diversity Studies, Business Administration, Public Administration, Sociology, Organizational Psychology, or Human Resources, or a related field, is required
      • Experience with and knowledge of community-focused nonprofit and social services organizations required
      • Seasoned manager with a minimum of 7+ years of experience leading DEI initiatives with an emphasis on strategy development and administration required
      • DEI or related certification preferable
        
        Budgeted Salary: $100,000 - $125,000
        
        Work position is hybrid.
        
        Vaccination Policy: Proof of vaccination or proof of first dose with scheduled 2nd dose within 30 days is required.
