The General Counsels Organization at American Express is seeking a Director & Counsel to serve as a regulatory subject matter expert for banking products across American Express consumer, commercial and network lines of business. This position will also provide primary legal support for American Express consumer checking, savings and debit products and work with business clients to develop and implement American Express consumer banking product roadmap.
**Role & Responsibilities:**
+ Provide primary legal and regulatory advice to business clients and other internal stakeholders responsible for American Express Rewards Checking and Savings portfolios on a range of matters, including product marketing and account acquisition, customer communications (including Deposit Agreements), new product development,
+ Support the development and implementation of consumer and business banking products and services; maintain a holistic view of the legal and risk positions relating to these products taken across different lines of business
+ Partner with banking product and business development teams in the negotiation and drafting of commercial agreements with partners, vendors and other third parties
+ Partner with business teams, Compliance, Risk, Finance, Privacy, Global Advertising & Marketing and Operational Excellence teams to deliver company objectives and mitigate legal risk
+ Join the legal team which serves as the subject matter experts within the General Counsels Organization for debit and deposit product regulation;
+ Coordinate and partner with colleagues in the GCO advising deposit-related businesses to ensure the most effective support, coordination and expertise in the area of consumer and commercial deposits
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ J.D. with admission to practice law in the U.S.
+ 5 years supporting consumer banking, deposit and debit products in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment
+ Direct experience advising on the applicability of consumer and deposit banking rules and regulations, including Regulation E, Regulation CC, Regulation D, Regulation DD, UCC and the National Automated Clearinghouse Association rules
+ Direct experience leading product development and managing complex transactions in a consumer banking context
+ Direct experience negotiating, drafting and analyzing complex commercial contracts
+ Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor to business leaders
+ Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, executive presence, and ability to effectively interact at all levels within the organization and with external regulators
+ Must work well in cross-functional team settings
**Preferred qualifications:**
+ Qualified to practice law in relevant jurisdiction in the United States
+ Strong experience working on U.S. bank consumer regulatory matters
+ Passion for working towards creative, solution-oriented outcomes that effectively address legal requirements
**Qualifications**
Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
