Political Editor (Volunteer)* Note: The following is an opportunity for flexible, part-time, volunteer work. Do you regularly identify unexplored aspects of the great political issues of our time? Do you know how to assemble, manage, and motivate a crack political team - to help them report and tell their stories with stylish, compelling writing?Would you like to be part of an up-and-coming, bold, creative, fun, friendly, idealistic, and highly motivated news organization producing eye-opening, honest journalism in the public interest?If the answers are yes, then we'd like to talk with you about joining us as a Political Editor.Politics is one of the most important beats at WhoWhatWhy. Through the lens of protecting democracy, our aim is to uncover the stories and angles that the bigger outfits miss or deliberately ignore.Check out WhoWhatWhy.org. We just want the truth - whatever it is.We have thought long and hard about what limits journalism's ability to effect positive change in the public interest, and we see two factors that dominate the landscape: (1) Commercial entities overly concerned with meeting financial goals and filling "eyeball" quotas - while not straying from the rest of the pack, thereby ensuring a sameness and superficiality to the coverage. (2) Ideologically driven outfits catering to a specific mindset and not daring to reveal things that would upset their readers - or force them to reconsider their values.At WhoWhatWhy, we go at each story with an open mind, boundless curiosity, and a willingness to dig deep and ask hard questions - even when we're told not to. Nothing is going to stand in our way when it comes to discovering what is going on beneath the surface, and why. Call it naive to believe such fearlessness possible, but we think it's the essence of true journalism.And because we're straight to the point, we make clear that we're looking for volunteers - skilled volunteers. Yes, we're a nonprofit that wasn't funded by a zillionaire. Yes, we decline to accept corporate ads. Because of that, we look for volunteers - with the possibility, down the road, of compensation based on proven results.If all this resonates with you, and you can commit a minimum of 15 hours a week, working remotely, on your own schedule, with colleagues around the world, we'd like to hear from you.Responsibilities* Build and run a strong political unit* Strategize and identify viable topics and avenues for reporting* Assign and edit stories by staff and freelancers* Manage and guide reporters* Uphold editorial guidelines to ensure quality and a consistent voice, tone, perspective, and copy standardsQualifications* Experience as a political editor and/or political reporter/writer* An inquisitive nature; a passion for thinking hard and digging deep; expansive knowledge of a broad range of political topics* An extensive address book and network of sources * Ability to pitch and assign stories while also independently reporting and writing original pieces as needed to meet overall content goals* You seek to make things better while maintaining the highest journalistic standards* Have a solid grasp of - and commitment to - our mission and vision* Demonstrate a collaborative spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environmentPerks* Channel your passion in a stimulating environment* Learn the nuts and bolts of nonprofit operations in an up-and-coming organization* Develop new skills and gain valuable experience that can enhance your professional trajectory* Do amazing work on a flexible, part-time basis* Have fun while you make a difference ExpectationsYou will work remotely and on your own schedule, and we ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months for at least 10-15 hours a week.
