Sports Management Focus Program Instructor (Summer Role)

Company: EXPLO
Location: Bronxville
Posted on: January 16, 2022

Job Description:

Sports Management Focus Program Instructor

EXPLO Senior

An academic summer enrichment program for students in grades 8-10 on the campus of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.

EXPLO is seeking enthusiastic, knowledgeable folks to ignite curiosity in students and to help create an inclusive, safe, supportive, and fun campus community.

About Us

In 1976, an idea took hold in the halls of MIT: a powerful reimagining of the summer experience for high school students. That idea became EXPLO, a pioneering and world-class summer enrichment program where students pursue their interests unconstrained by grades and tests. The result? A collaborative, transdisciplinary learning environment, where students drive their own learning through exploration.

Today, EXPLO is a mission-driven, educational non-profit with more than 85,000 student alumni who hail from 90 countries. We offer residential summer programs for students in grades 4 through 12 on three of the most beautiful college campuses on the East Coast of the U.S.

Our Impact

For many, EXPLO is a life-changing experience. Our students sometimes describe it as the place where they feel like the truest version of themselves. As an organization, we believe learning should be joyful and create experiences with engagement, inclusion, and magic as first principles. Each summer we share these experiences with smart and curious students from all over the world.

EXPLO is also committed to access and equity. This is why, as a not-for-profit, we strive to make our summer programs as accessible for as many curious and motivated young people as we can. EXPLO's financial aid program provides grant and scholarship support to families who demonstrate need through the EXPLO Scholarship Fund.

The Opportunity

Focus Program Instructors foster our students' curiosities and help them envision where their skills and interests may fit with the field of Sports Management. They do this, in part, by making transparent where their own passions, experiences, and knowledge lie and by teaching our students in an immersive, engaging style.

Focus Program Instructors work closely with our Instructional Coaches, our resident experts in non-traditional teaching + learning techniques. Together, they find imaginative ways of delivering the Focus Program's planned curriculum within each session. Focus Program Instructors teach one 15-24 student teaching section for the full day. This includes delivering the daily lesson plans, facilitating group work, hosting guest speakers, and trips.

Focus Program Instructors may also play a role in student life outside of class as Advisors. Advisors care for and supervise communities of 14-30 students during a session. Advisors are on-duty every other night and will spend parts of the afternoon and evening on their residential floor with the members of their Advisor group. They also deliver student programming, such as daily events and activities, in the evenings and at night. Finally, Focus Program Instructors + Advisors may also chaperone student weekend trips.

Working at EXPLO

As a member of a summer faculty that is collectively responsible for caring for students 24-hours per day, 7-days per week, all summer long, you'll work longer and harder at EXPLO than just about any other summer job you're considering. The work will also be more fun, meaningful, and professionally rewarding than just about anywhere else, too. This trade-off is not for everyone, but the result is that you'll join a team of interesting, engaged people from across the country and around the world who have also chosen a more intensive, more meaningful summer working experience. These are folks who are on campus to share their passions, to leap forward professionally, and to make a real difference in the lives of our students. If this describes you too, then we'd love to connect with you.

EXPLO staff tell us some of what they love about EXPLO is:
The lifelong friendships made here.
The meaningful work with kids.
The good pay.
The leadership opportunities.
The autonomy to adapt your approach to fit your students' needs and your passions.
The mentorship and professional development we provide.
The teaching skills you gain such as facilitation, critical thinking, and communication.

"I would not be a successful attorney if not for my experiences working at EXPLO for six summers. EXPLO is where I learned to be an adult and a professional." - former EXPLO staffer Julie Rusczek, a lawyer with Drinker, Biddle & Reath, a firm in Milwaukee, Wisc.

Other benefits include:
Room and board for the duration of summer including all meals
Staff-only affinity spaces and other professional support and development opportunities
Access to a gym and other exercise equipment and spaces
A week-long, hands-on Orientation and job training
Best in the industry staff to student ratios

Celebrate our summer community with an amazing Final Party for students (Oh, and the next night there's one for staff, too)
Gain valuable teaching and leadership skills and experience that you can leverage for future opportunities at EXPLO or elsewhere.
