Department Overview The MAXIMUS Canada Project Management Office (PMO) is a strategic enabling body setup to assist projects within portfolios with the successfully execution and delivery of intended business value. The PMO consists of a team of Project Director and Project Manager Professionals responsible for managing projects from the exploration/pipeline phase through to project stabilization and transition to ongoing operations. The PMO works closely with other key project stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered to meet their intended business needs while utilizing best practices, solid project management principles and appropriate standards. Role Summary The Project Portfolio Director (PPD) is responsible for oversight on an overall portfolio of projects ensuring alignment to MAXIMUS Canadas business strategies and priorities. The PPD will assist with planning, design, development, implementation as well as enterprise-wide forecasting and resource capacity for their portfolio of projects. In addition, the PPD will ensure projects within their portfolio are effectively estimated, well-planned and utilize project management best practices, principles and standards to deliver quality solutions as scoped, within budget and on time. Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the planning, design, development, and implementation of a portfolio of projects ensuring appropriate resources and technical solutions are processes, principles, standards, and best practices are utilized;
  • Coaching/mentoring and building a team comprised of employee project managers to support ongoing project demand;
  • Overseeing a set of project manager contactors to support the areas of the business which fluctuate in demand;
  • Providing project management oversight/support to project, program, and other portfolio level managers and directors;
  • Assisting in the prioritization of projects to ensure alignment with strategic objectives;
  • Planning, managing and providing staffing and resource profiles for the various projects within the portfolio. This includes understanding the skills and capacities;
  • Assisting the project and program managers in the planning of the project timelines, milestones, phases;
  • Ensuring the projects within the portfolio adhere to the PLC gates;
  • Managing and reporting on the various project portfolio budget (forecast and actuals);
  • Training and coaching project managers and teams;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the project deliverables and project progress;
  • Acting as an escalation point for the Project / Program Managers and Directors across the various projects ensuring project issues and risks are escalated further in a timely manner;
  • Supporting the program managers, to manage risks, issues, and dependencies and associated resolutions;
  • Determining resource allocation, deliverable timelines, and possible issues; and
  • Translating/preparing project portfolio status and associated dashboards. Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's Degree;
    • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification; and
    • 10+ years portfolio and project management experience; Or 15+ years portfolio, SDLC program and project management experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • Organization Skills - Extremely organized, capable of overseeing multiple projects with competing priorities;
      • Analytical Skills- Must be comfortable thinking both strategically and tactically working with teams, interpret data and results through critical thinking;
      • Communication Skills - Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate/collaborate at all levels; including team members, senior management;
      • Management Skills: 10+ years' experience managing, motivating and mentoring a team of project managers across multiple business areas and projects; strong preference for experience managing large scale government and/or human-service related projects;
      • Project Management: 15+ years' experience managing large-scale, complex implementations project including both technology and operational aspects; Preference is for experience managing large-scale government projects; and
      • Methodology: Experience implementing projects involving various methodologies including traditional waterfall, agile and hybrid. Core Competencies Results and Delivery
