The CEBC Laboratory Director works at the University of Kansas, Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis in Lawrence, Kansas. The director oversees operation of research and/or educational laboratory program(s) in buildings B&C, Life Science Research Laboratories, in collaboration with CEBC faculty, PIs and other research professionals. Oversees designing, testing, training and performing for experiments for CEBC research and/or KU courses. Creates lab schedules and tracks use of lab equipment. May procure, maintain, fabricate and/or troubleshoot laboratory equipment or materials. Develops and gives tutorials; trains/instructs faculty and students in utilizing facility and equipment including safety/security protocols. Compiles and disseminates findings for publication and/or presentations. Job Description 30% Laboratory Equipment

• Create and maintain (in consultation with appropriate researchers) Standard Operating Procedures, routine maintenance schedules, and user guides for CEBC researchers;
• Oversee equipment scheduling and ensure proper use of shared instrumentation;
• Perform (or delegate as appropriate, with appropriate follow-up) regular preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or analysis of reference samples to ensure on-spec performance. Coordinate any maintenance calls with vendors/service providers;
• Ensure proper use of equipment logbooks, and routinely review entries for abnormal/unusual performance;25% Laboratory Management
  • Maintain an inventory of gas cylinders and reconcile against rental statements;
  • Ensure proper storage of chemicals by hazard category, and ensure researchers keep chemical inventory up to date;
  • Assist researchers with quotations and ordering of research equipment;
  • Ensure general cleanliness and organization of laboratories;
  • Maintain adequate inventory of general/shared use consumables;20% Laboratory Safety
    • Proactively ensure compliance by all CEBC researchers with KU-EHS, OSHA, and other applicable regulations;
    • Review and maintain (in consultation with the CEBC Safety Committee) a database of Safety Hazard Reviews;
    • Review and maintain (in consultation with the CEBC Safety Committee) a CEBC-specific laboratory manual;
    • Organize laboratory inspection program, and promptly follow-up on any issues that arise;
    • Read relevant reports, safety-related journals, news articles, web sites, blogs, etc. for useful safety information, and disseminate to the CEBC research community;17% Research Support
      • Provide assistance with equipment installation, construction/setup, and instrumentation/data acquisition interfacing;
      • Provide assistance with sample analysis for internal/external users8% Laboratory Training
        • Provide orientation/general safety training for new researchers as necessary;
        • Provide orientation/training on laboratory equipment to users as necessary;
        • Develop/update training materials and documents Position Requirements
          • Work location statement - This position is required to work on-site. Required Qualifications
            • Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
            • Broad knowledge of principles of laboratory safety, including OSHA and other guidelines, as demonstrated by interview
            • Broad knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and techniques related to catalysis, as demonstrated in application materials
            • Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills, as demonstrated by cover letter and interview
            • At least 5 years research lab experience as evidenced by C.V. Preferred Qualifications
              • Hands-on experience using or maintaining several of the following laboratory instruments: GC (FID/TCD/MS), HPLC, FT-IR, UV-Vis, GPC, N2-BET, TGA/DSC, pXRD, XRF, ICP-OES, XPS
              • Experience with data acquisition systems (NI LabView)
              • Experience with high-pressure (> 30 bar) laboratory reactors
