Roles & Responsibilities: The Director of Operations is responsible for ensuring that clear research operations goals and objectives are established for the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences. The Director of Operations is also accountable for ensuring the established goals are addressed by appropriate interdisciplinary teams, and that the metrics and controls are in place to monitor performance and ensure successful completion of all top priority initiatives within the organization. Specific responsibilities are listed below.

  • Manage and oversee the Operations and Project Management teams to ensure quality and timely management of all infrastructure and research needs for the overall Department.
  • Manage and oversee all Space and facilities needs for both the Institute and the Department. Build strong relationships with and negotiate space and use of that space with the school's Space Planning team. Manage all space moves and relocations.
  • Act as the Designated Safety officer by providing oversight to the department regarding general safety in the laboratories. Maintain familiarity with the contents of the Chemical Hygiene Plan template and assist Faculty; and their designated laboratory safety officers with fulfilling the requirements of the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Ensure strong communication channels are established within the organization to create awareness and clarity on goals, priorities, and progress and to other stakeholders as needed.
  • Act as the liaison between the institute/department and Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, Building Services, Security, and the Dean's Office. Communicate to the department institutional policies and procedures as recommended by the central Mount Sinai Offices.
  • Partners with the Director of Finance and Business Development in forecasting and monitoring spend to achieve on budget performance for the organization and continuous long-term profitable operations.
    • Contributes to the development of strategic planning, and work plans for new initiatives, with particular attention to commercial initiatives and partnerships with commercial organizations and work plans for new initiatives, with particular attention to commercial initiatives and partnerships with commercial organizations.
    • Collaborates with department administration and leadership ensuring the overall portfolio of pharmaceutical, biotech, and other commercial collaborations, academic collaborations and internal institute projects are managed appropriately
    • Develop and maintain appropriate knowledge of and systems for change management within the organization.
    • Manage and oversee the Information Technology team for desktop support activities. Ensure IT questions and issues are managed in a timely, productive manner. Lead growth and maturity of the IT team to improve on and make more efficient the Institute's and Department's way of working. Requirements:
      • BS/MS/PhD with significant healthcare/pharmaceutical/ biotech industry or academic experience in both laboratory and office settings. Advanced degree is preferred.
      • 5-10 years of healthcare/pharmaceutical/ biotech industry or academic experiencepreferred
      • Specialized depth of expertise in own discipline and some knowledge of other disciplines
      • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and accomplish goals in team settings
      • Effective interpersonal skills - able to establish good working relationships and collaborate with networks of employees of all levels, able to foster cooperation in others, creative problem-solver.
      • Effective written and oral communication skills
      • Demonstrated leadership and credibility: diplomatic, decisive, straightforward, honest
      • Ability to delegate work effectively and hold others accountable for deliverables
