Senior Manager, Finance
The Smithsonian Institution is currently seeking a Senior Finance Manager to join the Corporate team in New York, NY. This position provides support for Media, Travel and Corporate teams and reports to the VP, Smithsonian Media and Corporate Finance. -The role is a hybrid role comprised of Finance and Accounting functions. The incumbent will be responsible for providing accurate, timely and complete work. -Duties and Responsibilities include the following: -Finance:

  • Assist the supervisor with the creation of the annual Budgets and bi-monthly Outlook projections across all Media, Travel and Corporate areas. -Specific departments include: Media, Channel, SI Books, Corporate Digital Studio, Corporate Digital Services, Journeys and Student Travel. -Process will include the creation of models for all revenues and expense assumptions, as well as the communication of all budget deadlines and deliverables to the leadership teams.
  • Prepare and present the monthly variance review to the SVP Finance and Administration, with review by supervisor. -These reviews include headcount analysis, editorial content cost per page, real vs. timing variances, and tracking vs. most recent Outlook.
  • Support the supervisor with the creation of the Long-Term Plan for Media, Travel and Corporate emphasizing potential growth opportunities, risks & challenges and making recommendations to potential efficiency improvements.
  • Use Lawson, Cognos, Datatrax, Sales Force, Metacomet, MyHouse, and 10+ Programmatic partner portals to create ad hoc reporting to aid in any analysis requested by senior management which may include current products or new products.
  • Maintain and oversee the Rights and Permissions of Smithsonian Media products and content ensuring that all transactions and payments are properly tracked and recorded.
  • Prepare and present a Quarterly Media Financial Update to review YTD performance vs. Budget, the most recent Outlook, Budget and/or LTP updates and timelines for key upcoming deliverables to mid & senior level managers.
  • Create the SI Books bi-annual author royalty calculation, bi-annual Obsolete Inventory reserve analysis and year-end revenue share calculation.Accounting:
    • Liaise with the Accounting department to ensure that expenses are being properly recorded and whether budgeted expenses need to be accrued.
    • Every period close, create Journal Entries to calculate Channel Royalties, Media Internal & External Sales Rep Commissions accruals and payments, Advertising Revenue Trial Close, and Journeys Tour Reconciliations.
    • Responsible for the pre-close analysis of Media, Channel, SI Books, Corporate Digital Studio, Corporate Digital Services, Journeys and Student Travel, by reviewing revenue and expenses with each area's Director prior to the close.
    • Support the supervisor with the reply to the KPMG interim and year-end audit requests by verifying revenue, expense, average terms, etc.
      Education/Knowledge /Qualifications: Bachelor's degree (BS); and 6 years related experience and/or training in Business, Finance, and Accounting.
      MINIMUM qualifications:
      • Candidates must have 6 years of work experience in business management, preferably in the media / publishing industry.
      • Work experience in Finance, extreme attention to detail and the ability to handle several projects at once under deadline pressure are essential. -
      • Must possess strong communication skills.
      • Must be fluent in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
      • Experience with Lawson, Cognos, or similar system preferable.
      • Proven ability to work effectively with both internal team members from multiple divisions and outside clients.
