OverviewThe New York Public Library serves four million New Yorkers across the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island through its circulating libraries and is one of the premier public research institutions in the world. It is nearly unique among libraries in the diversity and breadth of both its patrons and service offerings. The Digital team is responsible for helping the institution shape how technology supports our mission to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities.The Manager will support the Digital team's strategy of digital transformation by helping the Library understand:


  • how technology is impacting the strategies and goals of the Library,
  • how new technology changes the needs of our patrons, and
  • how we can best use, and must also control, digital technology to achieve the Library's expressed objectives and enduring mission.
    The Manager will help identify, select and oversee projects related to the Library's efforts to increase reading and the creation of new knowledge as well as efforts to understand how technology impacts NYPL's values. The Manager will help the library understand the potential for digital change to exacerbate the inequities that the Library works to address.The Manager should have subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:

    • Reading/eReading
    • Digital equity
    • Library operations
    • Data privacy Product development

      We are looking for someone we can count on to---Own:

      • Research into key areas of concern for NYPL Digital: respond to questions and convey analysis clearly through writing and presentation
      • Partner with the Director of Policy and CDO to devise and communicate digital strategy

        Teach our Digital colleagues:

        • Understand the library mission, strategies and values
        • Evaluate the potential impact of digital technologies
        • Assess the need for change and manage the communication in support of implementation

          Learn:

          • About NYPL - our culture, goals and strategy
          • About the intersection of technology and NYPL operations

            Improve:

            • Our understanding and potential benefits and also challenges posed by digital technology
            • Our communication of ideas across both the library and the sector

              Our expectations for this person are that within---1 month, this person will:

              • Familiarize yourself with the Digital team, staff and projects
              • Read, review and discuss previous and ongoing Digital Policy research and work

                3 months, this person will:
                • Deliver research projects designed in collaboration with the Director of Policy
                  6 months and beyond, this person will:

                  • Understand where the institution is trying to go (mission, strategy, values)Understand how changes in the technological context of the Library or the library's use of technology impacts our strategies or values
                  • Identify the biggest opportunities and challenges posed by technology
                  • Communicate clearly through written and oral communication. Where possible, identify solutions and, in rare instances, pilot interventions.
                    Responsibilities

                    • Conduct research into key areas of concern for NYPL digital: identify the most relevant questions and convey analysis clearly through writing and presentation
                    • Key deliverables include writing memos, desk research, basic data visualizations
                    • Work with partners across the library to understand priorities and strategies, help define clear research questions and complete analysis
                    • Other tasks and projects as assigned
                      Required Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education & Certifications
                      • Bachelor's degreeRequired Experience

                        • 5+ years of relevant experience in public libraries, digital technology, public policy
                        • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and users
