Job Description:

Living Labs Program Coordinator

at HealthCorps

Brooklyn, NY

Are you interested in serving your community and empowering the next generation of healthy leaders? HealthCorps' mission to improve the lives of youth both mentally and physically provides you the opportunity to do just that.

Who We Are

We're HealthCorps - a national non-profit organization committed to improving lives by addressing health inequities in communities through programming that includes innovative and engaging experiences for teens in education, leadership, and service learning. We empower teens by encouraging them to become change agents within their families, schools and neighborhoods. Our program is grounded in the understanding that limited access to health education can lead to a lifetime of social, emotional and physical challenges.

Where You Fit In

We're looking for a creative, friendly, self-starter who will implement an innovative site-wide wellness program in Brooklyn, NY that empowers families to make healthier choices for themselves. You're a recent college graduate that will serve as a near peer mentor to middle and high school students. You'll be a catalyst for sustainable change, promoting improved health and wellness at the Women In Need (WIN) Family Shelter in Brooklyn, NY.

HealthCorps will deploy a part-time Program Coordinator to work directly with WIN staff and provide onsite technical assistance and support to staff as they develop and execute their wellness action plans. Leveraging HealthCorps' catalogue of health promoting activities and resources, as well as our experience activating students in the process of promoting wellness on campus, the Program Coordinator will coordinate with staff to provide onsite support to staff to refine and execute their yearly wellness action plans.

Anticipated Objectives:

  • Meet individually with staff to support development and execution of a wellness action plan based on the needs of the site.
  • Prepare HC + Mother Cabrini Wellness Action Plan Toolkits to support WIN when developing and executing action plans each year
  • Determine appropriate health and wellness activities based on the needs of the overall family unit.

    What You'll Do

Assess Your Community's Needs and Progress. You will research the health inequities the community you serve is facing and then tailor your program to address the community's most pressing needs through direct education as well as policy, systems and environmental work. You'll measure progress through surveys, interviews and observations. HealthCorps utilizes a qualitative approach to evaluating the impact of the program with WIN residents. After each unique programming activity, the Program Coordinator will speak with each resident in attendance utilizing a list of predetermined questions. The questions will be designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the particular health and wellness activity and the connection to the holistic health of the individual. Answers will be compiled in a comprehensive document that will be available to the appropriate parties upon request.

Develop Strong Relationships. You'll collaborate with WIN staff, as well as community members, to build wellness champions that support your delivery of health and wellness programming. You will also reach sideways to learn from and support your team of fellow coordinators, attend and actively participate in ongoing professional development, summer and mid-year trainings with the HealthCorps Team.
    • Offering 1:1 mentoring and support to residents in collaboration with staff.

Deliver Health Education Program. HealthCorps will collaborate with WIN staff to improve the culture of health and wellness at the WIN NYC site by facilitating health promoting activities including:
      • Developing wellness newsletters to provide residents and staff with resources, recipes and tips for staying healthy.
      • Supporting resident and staff wellness challenges to promote healthy habits and help elevate wellness as a priority at the sites.
      • Delivering passive programming toolkits to residents designed to promote health and wellness activities in a manner and timeframe most appropriate to residents' schedules.
      • Delivering larger-scale programming toolkits designed to engage residents for a more in-depth programming approach to health and wellness activities. Offering 1:1 mentoring and support to residents in collaboration with staff.

Share and Make Aware. You'll lean-in to your creative side to support the development and promotion of HealthCorps' initiatives through social media.

Commit to the HealthCorps Mission. You will prioritize health and wellness on a daily basis and ultimately work to ensure that health is accessible for all. You will embody the HealthCorps' mission by acting as a positive, healthy role model within your site(s) and community.
