Job Description:

Each Neurologist functions as a cooperate and collegial team member with the entire staff.

The position is for board eligible, board certified Neurologist who will perform comprehensive neurological exams for veteran patients.

Primary duties are to perform full general neurological examinations on established on newly consulted patients in the Neurology clinics, for signs or symptoms of neurological dysfunction.

The position will quality for credentialing and privileging for admission, evaluation, treatment, consultation, tele-health, order diagnostic studies and procedures.

Perform general Neurology procedures except as specifically excluded from practice, on patients of all ages with symptoms of neurological dysfunction.

Perform full neurological exams and supervises neurology residents and medical students throughout NYHHS.

Initiate changes in the system for delivering care based on evidence based medicine research and/or studies.

Assess, plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate educational programs.

Teach effectively and creatively and provide guidance to others involved in the delivery of the educational program.

Promote and assist others in the application of findings from research and/or studies.

The Neurologist works within his/her privileges at all times.

The Neurologist is expected to maintain current knowledge and skills.

He/she must be able to deliver interventions throughout the full spectrum of neurology care (e.g. he/she is expected to maintain good diagnostic and therapeutic acumen).

Teaching is an integral part of the work of a VA staff Neurologist. This pertains to colleagues, residents, medical and nursing students, nursing and other ancillary staff.

Exercise corporate citizenship by serving as leader and/or active member on Medical Center committees, as requested.

Provide expanded access to services via off normal tour or on-call periods.

Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy. All administrative work should be completed in a timely fashion. All VA requirements must be met on a timely basis.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; rotating shifts as necessary

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

    Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

    Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

    Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

    Proficiency in spoken and written English.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.


    Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties in a hospital setting under normal and emergent conditions. Moderate lifting, 15-44 lbs; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, both hands required, walking or standing up to 4 hours per day; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable; hearing aid permitted.None
