The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF s mission has been transformative to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society. LDF s litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system. LDF seeks an experienced Paralegal Manager to assist LDF attorneys in each of these substantive areas. The Paralegal Manager, who will be based in LDF s New York office, has primary responsibility for providing paralegal support to LDF s litigation program, as well as for providing assistance, as needed, for our legislative and public policy efforts. Serving as both a working paralegal and as the manager of at least two other paralegals, the Paralegal Manager will ensure that case-related records and filings are efficiently updated, finalized, and organized at every phase of litigation. In addition, the Paralegal Manager will work to train the paralegal staff in best practices, to coordinate paralegal workloads to ensure that all practice areas are adequately supported, and to interface with all of LDF s attorneys. Overall, the Paralegal Manager will play an essential role in supporting the advocacy-related activities in which LDF engages, from motion practice and trials at the federal trial and state court level to briefs submitted to the Supreme Court of the United States. Responsibilities include: Provide paralegal support to attorneys to ensure that caseloads are properly staffed; Coordinate and manage assignments with attorneys and paralegals; Oversee and provide direction on all paralegal projects; Work to ensure that paralegal projects are completed efficiently and accurately; Create and maintain case and document tracking databases; Responsible for all aspects of litigation support including research, review of document production, cite checking, shepardizing, blue booking, electronic filing, organizing exhibits, trial preparation, and in-court assistance; Assist with case in-take process; Work with senior attorneys and Human Resources Staff on performance and administrative issues; Responsible for paralegal performance evaluations; Oversight of paralegal administrative functions; Train paralegals in all aspects of litigation support, including by refining and implementing a training program that improves efficiency, and the utilization and performance of paralegal group; Operationalize and manage document retention policy, indexing and storage; Work with IT to determine technology and software needs; and Other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications include: Commitment to racial justice and civil rights; 5 plus years of paralegal experience; Experience with federal court litigation, including the federal Electronic Case Management System and PACER, and state court litigation preferred; Experience using the Bluebook, the Chicago Manual Style, Lexis-Nexis, and Westlaw; Excellent computer skills familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, and database systems a plus; Trial preparation experience; Experience supervising other paralegals; Must be a self-starter, professional and diligent with the ability to work well within a team as well as independently; Excellent interpersonal skills, including a commitment to teamwork, supportiveness, and the well-being of his or her staff; Strong oral and written communication skills; Excellent research, writing, and proofreading skills; Strong organizational skills and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and in a timely manner; Ability to work well under pressure with attention to detail; Demonstrate willingness to be flexible, and assume new responsibilities as the needs change and as the supervisory function evolves, and to identify ways to enhance efficiency; Willingness to work overtime, including occasional weekends.
