The New York Times is looking for a Lead Product Designer to help drive the evolution of our most prominent reader-facing surfaces within our UX Foundations group, whose mission is to ensure The New York Times delivers a quality, cohesive cross-platform user experience worthy of our journalism. The group is comprised of designers, engineers, data analysts, product managers and project managers who have the expertise, authority and altitude to prioritize the UX of our products and quality of our systems in wide-ranging partnerships across the organization. Your priority this year will be on The New York Times homepage, working closely with cross-functional and editorial partners to extend and iterate upon the current design system in order to meet ever-evolving newsroom and reader needs. By getting to know the ins-and-outs of our design system and homepage production, youll balance solving for flexibility in timely news-driven moments while constantly striving for future scalability. Youll identify and advocate for opportunities to meet unmet reader needs and drive habit. Youll work with product, engineering, editorial, research and data partners to iterate on and create new homepage layout options, as well as collaborate closely with partner teams to bring their features into the defined homepage system. Youll look holistically at the page, iterating on the design details to ensure were adhering to The New York Times brand characteristics and meeting various business needs, while clearly signalling importance, timeliness, and distinctiveness across various types of Times content. If you enjoy incrementally designing toward a larger vision, rendering complex problems simple, and thoughtfully applying and extending design systems, this is the role for you. Ultimately, your work will help champion the notion that high-quality journalism and news experiences are worth paying for. You will report to the Executive Product Design Director, UX Foundations. Your Responsibilities Balance contributing individual work and guiding direction of other designers Help guide high-level product strategy in tandem with project leadership, ensuring were asking the right questions and solving for distinct needs Facilitate understanding through design exercises and workshops Initiate and help conduct research to surface insights to guide the vision, identify pain points and surface opportunities Help shape feature implementation by providing a user-centered perspective to the teams solution Create sketches, wireframes, prototypes, user journeys, and other frameworks to help build alignment, promote conversations and aid decision-making Work with engineers to ensure the visual and user experience quality of the teams output Basic Qualifications 7+ years of relevant experience Experience giving direction to more junior design team members Excellent visual and typographic sensibility Experience designing digital experiences, with recent experience designing features that demonstrate successful UX solutions, elegant visual design, and clear information architecture A portfolio of work that showcases your problem-solving process along with finished design work Proficiency in Figma, Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, or equivalent design tools Preferred Qualifications: Comfort communicating design decisions to a variety of audiences You value collaboration and communication Youre equally passionate about the big picture and the small details Cross-discipline fluency.
