We're building a state-of-the-art platform to aggregate, characterize, and assemble natural microbes into new combinations ("Supercultures"), which are used by our customers to make plant-based cheeses with authentic dairy tastes, lower-alcohol wines with full flavor, personal care products with natural functional ingredients, and much more. Along the way, we're developing new field of microbial community design, driven by a diverse team of world-class scientists.We're in active R&D projects with some of the largest manufacturers in the food, beverage, and personal care industries. Our natural cultures are replacing artificial ingredients, improving sustainability and nutrition, and unlocking entirely new value propositions. We're backed by top venture capital investors, including Y-Combinator, Shine Capital, and Sequoia, and have raised over $30M in Seed and Series A funding.We're looking for a Research Associate - Biology to join our founding scientific team of chemists, bioengineers, biologists, and computational scientists. This individual will drive Kingdom's molecular biology capacities across food and consumer packaged goods by developing and conducting innovative analysis approaches for various biological matrices that inform key consumer benefits.ResponsibilitiesThis is a full time, in-person role at our state-of-the-art headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. In this role, you will:* Work with teams across distinct scientific domains (chemistry, biology, etc.) to provideexperimental assistance and advance product development projects in parallel* Independently design and execute molecular biology experiments (e.g., DNA extraction, mRNA extraction, PCR, in vitro enzymatic assays, microbial fermentation, mammalian cell culture)* Function autonomously within a supportive environment and clearly communicate experimental progress and results with managers and coworkers in a timely manner* Document and record experiments clearly in electronic tools and databases* Identify analytical capability gaps and work collaboratively with the team to close these gapsWhy become a Research Assistant at Kingdom Supercultures?* Meaningful work: do interesting science that rapidly produces tangible outputs, moving faster than standard academic settings to produce real-world outputs that contribute to worthy goals (scientific innovation, sustainability, nutrition/health, and better products in the world)* Professional advancement and rewards: earn recognition for doing great work; take on responsibilities for more challenging tasks when ready; capitalize on future advancement opportunities (including a unique path to a Scientist role that doesn't require further formal education)* Skill growth and learning: develop wet lab, scientific problem solving/experimental design, and technical communications skills; tackle appropriately challenging problems with support from a world-class scientific team* Ownership and task autonomy: have and feel responsibility for individually-led work process and outputs* Valued member of a high-performing team: contribute to a fast-growing team, with opportunities to participate in team decisions and receive mentorship from experienced scientistsCompetencies* Domain knowledge of molecular biology or related fields (e.g., microbiology, biochemistry, etc.)* Demonstrated experience in designing and troubleshooting experiments* Ability to troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation independently with proper instruction* Experience with high throughput screening workflows is a plus* Ability to work productively in a fast-paced collaborative environment and ability to organize multiple experiments accordingly.Values* Ownership* Bias for action* Intellectual curiosity* Transparent communication* Commitment to excellence* ServiceQualifications* BS or MS in biology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology or related field* > 2 years of post-degree relevant experience using molecular biology techniques
