Reports to: Inpatient Coder - Inpatient Coding Manager or Outpatient Coder - Outpatient Coding Manager

Getting it Right
To achieve appropriate and timely reimbursement and data integrity, the Specialty Coder must work Health Information Integrity (HII) review nurses, and physicians/providers in clarifying documentation, providing education and ensuring accurate and compliant application of correct coding principles for hospital cardiac services and other more complex specialties.

The Specialty Coder is responsible for the following:
Works with HII nurses, cardiology departments and cardiologists/providers on an ongoing basis to assist physicians/providers in complete and accurate documentation through concurrent processes, and where necessary, retrospective queries.
Serves as a subject matter expert to coders relative to cardiac and related diagnoses and procedures or procedures complex in nature.Assign ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes and present on admission (POA) indicatorsCardiac services include but not limited to: Valve replacements, CardiAmp, NICU, Watchman, Heart Mate, Pacemakers/AICD, Interventional Radiology procedures, Electrophysiology procedures, clinical trial procedures
Complex services include: Spinal fusions, burns, spinal stimulators, kypoplasty (outpatient)
Assigns CPT and HCPCS outpatient procedure codes and ICD-10-CM codes.
Maintains average productivity and quality standards based on Ardent Shared Coding standards.
Maintains at least a 95% accuracy rate.
Abstracts facility required data in the electronic system.
Accurate assignment of Discharge Disposition status.
Works applicable edits as needed.
Communicates issues to the appropriate Coding Manager.
Thorough understanding of ICD-10 Official Coding Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and AHA Coding Clinic.
Through understanding of HCPCS/CPT coding systems and CPT Assistant and Coding Clinic for HCPCS guidelines.
Thorough understanding of Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs).
Thorough understanding of Medicare Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS), Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC).
Understanding of coding resources and tools.
Acknowledgement of receipt and review of updated Ardent coding policies.
Maintains continuing education (CE) requirements per Ardent policy.

Are you ready?
We are seeking the right blend of experience and education.

Education :
Successful completion of a Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacology course
Successful completion of an ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding training and/or classes
Comprehensive knowledge of Interventional Cardiology Coding guidelines
Bachelor's degree in a health related profession, or Associate's degree with relevant healthcare experience (equivalent to bachelor's)
Coding credential required (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC-H, CPC, etc.)

Experience & Requirements :
Minimum 2 years coding with emphasis on cardiac services preferred with coding/abstracting experience in ICD-10-CM/PCS inpatient or outpatient coding. Advanced training in ICD-10.
Computer and software skills, including Word, Excel, encoder/grouper
Strong written and verbal communications skills
Strong interpersonal skills, including professional, team player, able to communicate well with others on all levels; pleasing personality, positive; regular contacts with other personnel throughout and outside the facility
