The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's leading advocates on behalf of constitutional rights and liberties. Founded in 1951, as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with more than 180,000 members and supporters, and seven offices statewide. We work in the courts, in the legislatures and on the streets to advocate for racial and economic justice, free speech, freedom of religion, privacy and equality before the law for all New Yorkers. DEI VISION STATEMENT
The NYCLU affirmatively values the humanity and contributions of those we work with, inside and outside of the organization; and will take action to build and sustain an equitable, anti-racist culture that centers the voices and experiences of marginalized and directly impacted people and communities, and an organizational environment where all people feel valued, trusted, and respected. We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and having a workforce that reflects the population that we serve and actively recruit people of color, women, people with disabilities, formerly incarcerated people, and LGBTQ and gender non-conforming people.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
For decades, the NYCLU has been the legal arm of New York's reproductive rights movement. Our vision of reproductive rights, health and justice imagines all people with the ability and resources to make decisions about creating and growing families that are right for them, and this encompasses the broad range of information and access to services that are essential to a person's bodily autonomy, health, and equality. Our work focuses particularly on the most vulnerable New Yorkers: low-income people, people of color, immigrants, and adolescents.
With the fall of Roe v Wade, New York is called upon to ensure access to abortion for New Yorkers and those who would seek care in New York. This position will support our work to expand and protect access through legislation and policy advocacy, including in areas such as clinic access, provider and seeker protections, constitutional safeguards, and more.
The NYCLU seeks an attorney with gender justice and reproductive rights experience and expertise to support NYCLU's ongoing gender justice and reproductive rights policy, advocacy, and legal work, including statutory analysis, legal research and writing.
This position would be housed in NYCLU's policy department supervised by the Policy Director. The NYCLU's policy department works on a wide range of civil rights and civil liberties matters with the NYCLU's legal, communications, and field departments, as well as external partner organizations. Ultimately, this work supports the legislative, advocacy, and communications reproductive rights work of the NYCLU.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research and writing in collaboration with staff that work on gender justice and reproductive rights matters;
  • Engage in gender justice and reproductive rights policy advocacy work, which includes collaborating with the NYCLU's legal, field, and communications departments; work with NYCLU offices around New York; work with other advocacy organizations and elected officials; participate in public education on civil liberties issues by speaking at public events;
  • Participate in gender justice and reproductive rights related planning for the policy department.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience related to the field of reproductive rights, health and justice;
    • Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills;
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, public-interest setting and to foster and support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace; and
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to advocate effectively, including an ability to initiate and follow through on public-interest litigation or advocacy.
