Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.


The Economic Empowerment Program (EEP) prepares clients for career-track employment in the living wage economy through structured training in computer skills, literacy, and professional development, with the opportunity to complete further occupational training and internships. The Economic Empowerment Specialist will provide professional development related case management and counseling services, including crisis intervention, safety planning, and intake and assessment for cohorts of survivors/victims of gender-based violence participating in Sanctuary for Families Economic Empowerment Program.


  • Provides team leadership for cohorts of clients (25 - 30 individuals) engaged in EEP trainings
  • Provides career counseling, develops, implements, and monitors appropriate service plans to meet identified economic empowerment needs for survivors/victims of domestic violence.
  • Program development, project coordination, and management support around EEP programs
  • Supports EEP's Deputy Director in tracking client attendance, punctuality, and accountability throughout EEP workshops
  • Help to ensure EEP meets or exceeds program goals and outcome requirements
  • Builds and maintains relationships with community organizations to maximize referrals, outreach and recruitment and conducts outreach and training to community organizations as needed
  • Provides crisis intervention for EEP clients with a focus on trauma, safety, and other related issues
  • Provides comprehensive individual services including advocacy, case management, and referrals to victims of domestic violence
  • Facilitates client referrals to outside resources providing job readiness, training, placement, career development, education, and other economic empowerment related services
  • Responsible to supervise interns and volunteers as needed
  • Completes case documentation and maintain up-to-date paper and digital records including Service Tracking Systems

  • Perform any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed

    • Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Mental Health Counseling required
    • Professional license or eligibility within the first year of hire required
    • Experience working with clients participating in workforce development activities and workshops and possesses the ability to manage and facilitate clients in a classroom setting effectively
    • Familiar with program and project coordination in the area of workforce development, employment services, job training, or adult education
    • Familiar with gender-based violence dynamics, as well as issues of trauma, violence prevention and victimization, and significant experience working in a culturally and racially diverse environment
    • Strong clinical skills required, including assessment, engagement, and crisis intervention
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, including working collaboratively with professionals across disciplines
    • Flexibility to prioritize and work on multiple projects and highly developed problem-solving skills
    • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented
    • Must have strong analytical and quantitative skills
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills
    • Familiarity to Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, and Excel) and Google Apps (including Sheets, Docs, Classroom, and Slides)
    • Understanding of and ability to work with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds
    • Must have the flexibility to work some evenings

      Minimum Salary: $58,500 annually
