ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Chief Financial
Officer (CFO) will lead all aspects of finance, including
accounting, contract management, financial planning, financial
reporting, budgeting, risk management, purchasing, reception and/or
mailroom, and capital/housing development.
The CFO's responsibilities will include, but will not be limited
to, the following areas of focus:
Accounting & Operations
Manage the organization's finance function to ensure the accurate
execution of operational finance (i.e., accounting, reporting,
banking, budgeting, leasing, procurement, and compliance) and the
delivery of all mandated financial reports to authorizers, lenders,
funders, auditors, and other key stakeholders.
Interact with government agencies and other funders and support
colleagues on contract/grant negotiations, billing and audits.
Ensure effective delivery of high-quality services in compliance
with funding source mandates (federal, state, city, and private
grants).
Manage and control expenses and income; oversee management of all
accounts receivable/payable, payroll, Medicare billing and treasury
functions including timely receipts and effective reporting.
Manage the audit process to ensure compliance with agency audit
requests; respond to financial audit reports in a timely, effective
and efficient manner.
Collaborate with the Executive Director, COO, Housing Development
Manager and others to explore and manage long-range real estate
planning and development opportunities.
Collaborate with the External Relations and Advancement team (ERA)
on funder reports and related financial documents for external
consumption. Offer guidance and participate in fundraising
proposals and requests for support to corporations, foundations,
individuals and government entities. Provide guidance and support
on marketing and fundraising activities.
Strategic Financial Management
Drive long-term financial strategy development: strengthen the
organization's balance sheet and set appropriate financial targets
to ensure financial sustainability.
Serve as lead liaison to the Board of Directors' Finance and Audit
Committees and support other committees as needed.
Assess and improve systems across financial reporting, accounting,
payroll, purchasing, expense, cash and inventory control functions,
and the organization's HRIS.
Forecast, monitor, and communicate regularly with stakeholders on
budget challenges and opportunities; coordinate budget
modifications.
Oversee outsourced financial management and medical billing
services provided by BTQ; complete assessment of the financial
management system and implement improvements.
Organizational & Team Leadership
Build, develop, and empower a strong team and external resources in
an equitable and inclusive manner. Directly manage a team of 5+
finance professionals.
Partner with the Executive Director and the Senior Leadership Team
on operational and strategic issues; provide recommendations based
on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and
allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
Participate in BCS' strategic planning processes to establish and
monitor multi-year, detailed financial models and ensure progress
towards goals.
Inform and track organizational planning to integrate operations in
line with budgets, strategic plans and financial best
practices.
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team
to prepare budget projections to ensure accurate annual operating
budgets.
Partner with the Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team to
communicate with public and private funders, membership
organizations, elected officials and community leaders on the
delivery of high-quality services relevant to communities
throughout Brooklyn.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
The successful candidate will possess the following skills and
attributes:
Strong alignment with the BCS mission; an unwavering commitment to

10+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles,
including management experience in complex non-profit
organizations; experience in managing a budget of at least $15
million with multiple funding streams. Experience with non-profit
audits and as a Controller is preferred.
Exceptional people management skills; experience in building and
retaining strong teams and managing external resources. Excellent
communication, partnership and collaboration skills with the proven
ability to work across teams and build consensus.
Experience in grant accounting (including strong knowledge of
current GAAP pronouncements for revenue recognition, determination
of conditional/unconditional & restricted/unrestricted funding);
demonstrable experience in subgrant accounting implementation and
evaluation; direct experience managing private foundation grants:
utilization, restriction and release rules, grantor reporting.
Direct experience with NYC and NYS government contracts: budgeting,
vouchering, multi-site allocations, indirect cost rates, and
financial reporting, including agencies such as OMH, OPWDD, DOHMH,
DYCD, DHS.
Strong analytical skills and an ability to articulate variances
between projected and actual results, as well as to interpret
cash-basis activities and reflect them in an accrual-based
accounting reporting structure.
Exceptional systems and process orientation and a track record of
designing and implementing system improvements.
Ability to handle complex challenges with tact and diplomacy and to
balance multiple demands on time and attention. Willingness to roll
up sleeves and dig into the details to get things done.
Community-minded, patient, creative, flexible, and compassionate. A
demonstrated commitment to integrity and consistent modeling of
ethical behavior and decision making.
BS in Finance or Accounting preferred.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary range for this role is $185,000 to $210,000 based on
commensurate experience. There is also a generous benefits package
including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, and retirement
accounts with matching.
