Your Impact
The Chief of Elementary Schools is responsible for overseeing our curricular and instructional vision for all 17 elementary schools. This role will directly manage regional superintendents who directly manage a portfolio of schools as they operationalize instruction for Achievement First scholars. - Within the broader network, the Chief of Elementary Schools will collaborate on large-scale initiatives including COVID response, new curriculum adoption, and addressing our value of Leading for Racial Equity through our student culture, curriculum and instruction. The Chief of Elementary Schools is a senior leadership role that will report to the Superintendent and serve as a member of AF's senior leadership team ("the Operating Team") and will partner with other senior leaders to move the organization powerfully forward.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Lead the AF organizational approach to improving academic results at the elementary schools - through goal setting, progress monitoring, and performance management.
  • Serve on the AF Operating Team with other senior leaders to provide strategic leadership and driving organizational strategy. -
  • Manage the Regional Superintendents to unlock their potential as individuals and team leaders driving a strong core program at their respective sites. This includes regular 1:1 coaching meetings with all direct reports, project updates and coaching aligned to learning and development goals and action planning; participation in coaching meetings with managers to assess learning and development goals, progress to goals and overall elementary school health, progress to vision and team management. - -
  • Lead team and network meetings including planning, agenda setting and execution for check-ins, coaching meetings, team meetings (i.e. cross-model content meetings, classic and GF meetings). This includes participation in and sometimes leading network-level meetings regarding COVID response; school culture across academy levels, addressing LRE, periodic Operating Team calls, and Regional Superintendent meetings.
  • Plan/provide direct PD to leaders in cohort or dean development windows
  • Conduct observations, including direct reports leading professional development sessions, facilitating meetings, and/or check-ins with their direct reports. -

    Candidate Profile
    An ideal candidate will support AF core values and be a results-oriented, determined, skilled leader with a strong track record of results. - The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree, with a graduate degree in education preferred. - Additional requirements include: a teaching certificate and training in leadership, team management, data analysis/curriculum, and program design/management. -
    An ideal candidate will demonstrate competency in the following areas:

    • Proven relationship manager with the ability to coach and set measurable goals to ensure ongoing development of the team, with a minimum of five years leading, coaching and managing other direct reports
    • Knowledge of data analysis, selection, performance management, curriculum development, teaching and learning pedagogy, disciplinary content knowledge, assessment design and evaluation, teaching evaluation, team management, vision building and development, and instructional coaching.

      In addition, the following characteristics are required to be successful on this team:

      • Expertise in overall health and vision of academic and school models, including school design, management, school operations, staffing and finance. -
      • Experience as a teacher, teacher-coach, school leader and district leader, in an urban setting preferred
      • A demonstrable commitment to pursuing equity
      • A strong track record of experience and results as a trusted member of an organization's senior leadership team
      • Excellent communication and influencing skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and the school network
      • Exceptional strategic, analytical, and critical thinking skills. - -
