ABOUT US
The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap
among underserved students by providing programs designed to
improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence,
character and attitudes for success in life.
New York Edge is a non-profit organization and one of the largest
providers of school-based afterschool programs in New York City and
the metropolitan region. We impact more than 25,000 students from
over 120 sites in grades K-12 typically in underserved
neighborhoods. Programs run before or after the school day,
year-round (including Saturdays, over the summer, and holiday
periods).
SUMMARY
Comic Book Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in
aactivities. Instructors utilize and adapt the New York State Arts
Learning Standards in order to create an engaging and awarding
activity that encourages participation in New York Edge
programs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
+ Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for
maintaining order among the students for whom they are
responsible.
+ Organize, lead, and promote interest in arts activities such as
theater, music, visual art, photography & digital media, chorus,
dance, and percussion.
+ Organize performance groups and direct their rehearsals.
+ Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects,
and communicate those objectives to students.
+ Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and
facilities, and adapt activities to meet the students needs.
+ Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
+ Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to
participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials
and equipment.
+ Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other
students, explaining the rules , and encouraging participation.
+ Evaluate activity to determine if they are producing desired
results.
+ Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet
students' varying needs and interests.
+ Coordinate competitions between other New York Edge Foundation
programs.
+ Progressive development of student skills leading to a final
project
+ Provide support during the academic / homework hour
+ Promotes positive character development in all youth
REQUIRED SKILLS
+ Must have experience successfully teaching and instructing youth
in the Arts.
+ Must be fully Covid-19 Vaccinated.
+ Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
QUALIFICATIONS
+ High school diploma
+ Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or
experience is required
+ Must have a passion for New York Edge mission and demonstrated
interest in the field of education and youth development
+ Must be adaptable to the work environment on-site.
+ Physical requirements, including ability to climb stairs, lift
children, perform CPR, communicate by voice, monitor and evaluate
events visually and aurally.
+ As an essential worker it is expected at this time, that you have
schedule flexibility based on State, Local and Federal pandemic
management conditions and requirements (e.g. School closures,
training, emergency orders)
+ Certifications and credentials in respective skill-based activity
highly preferred
+ Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one
activity preferred as well
+ Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but
not limited to fingerprinting, employment history, and criminal

WORK SCHEDULE
+ 9-15 hours per week.
+ Monday to Friday 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Arts Specialists will be required to report to the school building
and interact with staff, students, parents and school
administration while following DOH Covid-19 guidelines such as
wearing PPE and remaining socially distant.
At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and
security clearances through the Department of Education and
Department of Health.
