Laboratory is hiring a full-time Lab Support Technician! This
position works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM –
4:00 PM, with no weekends or holidays. The primary purpose of this
role is to prepare, process, clean, and maintain the supply of
glassware, equipment, and workspace required to support laboratory
functions and procedures. We are also open to considering
candidates at the Specimen Processor level—a step lower on the
Clinical Lab Career Ladder with different qualification
requirements (see qualifications section).Final candidates will be
selected for a job title within the career ladder that reflects
level of education, experience, and manager discretion at time of
offer. The starting range of pay for Specimen Processor begins at
$19/hour. The ideal candidate will have general anatomy knowledge.
ResponsibilitiesEquipment & Supply Preparation - Demonstrate
working knowledge of laboratory equipment. - Operate the oven
dryer, water deionizer unit, and pipette washer. - Prepare working
stock of laboratory solutions. - Assemble specimen collection
supplies and prepare supplies for physicians’ offices and
off-campus lab locations. - Keep the Operating Room and Outpatient
Procedure Unit stocked with formalin-filled containers and other
requested items. Cleaning & Maintenance - Perform specialized
cleaning procedures using prescribed techniques and disinfectants.
- Clean laboratory countertops, sinks, glassware, cabinets, water
baths, and other equipment. - Defrost and clean laboratory
refrigerators. - Examine all glassware for cleanliness, defects, or
breakage. - Test glassware, pipettes, and acid-washed items for
acidity. - Maintain an orderly storeroom. Safety & Compliance -
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. -
Test and clean emergency showers and eyewash stations; maintain
required records. - Sort and dispose of laboratory waste
appropriately. - Dispose of clinical specimens following proper
procedures. - Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant working
environment. Support & Clerical Functions - Transport specimens,
requisitions, and reports to appropriate areas. - File laboratory
reports and slides accurately. - Inventory, requisition, and
restock supplies as needed. - Perform clerical duties with accuracy
and attention to detail. - Attend required meetings and in-service
training sessions. - Follow all UPMC and Laboratory policies and
procedures. Laboratory Support Technician qualifications: - High
School diploma or equivalent, and at least 2 yrs experience as a
Specimen Processor (or equivalent) required in a clinical lab, - OR
Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least
1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a
clinical lab, - OR Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification
and 1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a
clinical lab, - OR Successful completion of a 50wk U.S. military
medical laboratory training course, ORB.S. degree from an
accredited institution with a major in a biological or clinical
laboratory science - OR Currently enrolled in a MLS (Medical
Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 yrs
college credits required. Specimen Processor qualifications: - High
School diploma or equivalent. - Three to six months of experience
in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical
environment preferred, including knowledge of or experience in
Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems. - Three to
six months of experience in a service environment including call
center, customer service center, or product
distribution/fulfillment center preferred. - Good oral and written
communication skills required. - Ability to communicate effectively
with all age groups and populations of external and internal
customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.
- Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: - Medical Laboratory
Assistant MLA (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. - Act
